La Bayadere is a ballet by Russian and French ballet master Marius Petipa to a work by Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus. The premiere took place in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theater in St. Petersburg. The literary basis is the play "Shakuntala" and the ballad "God and the Bayadere" by I.V. Goethe.

The plot is based on a romantic Indian legend about the unhappy love of a brave warrior and a bayadere. Solor hunts tigers with friends in the sacred forest. He and the fakir Magedaveya lag behind the others to talk to the bayadere, the beautiful Nikiya. She is a bayadere (or otherwise, devadasi). So in South India they call girls dedicated to the deity and living at the temple all their lives. Love breaks out between Solor and Nikiya. But the Great Brahmin is in love with the girl, and the young man sees the son-in-law of the Rajah.

Will Solor be able to fulfill the oath of eternal love for Nikiya, given over the sacred fire? Screenplay - Sergei Marius Petipa and Khudekov.
